Patios are one of the most popular home upgrades in Western Australia, yet in parts of the state there is nobody local to build one. In October 2026 we searched 40 population centres, from the Perth suburbs to the Kimberley, and counted the patio specialists based in each.
Key takeaways
- Seven WA towns, including Port Hedland with 15,298 people, had no confirmed local patio installer.
- Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Albany, Karratha, Geraldton and Broome have only about 1 to 1.4 specialists per 10,000 people.
- Perth, Peel and the Bunbury to Margaret River corridor are well supplied or saturated.

The biggest gaps
Seven towns had no confirmed local patio specialist at all, and each is a long way from the nearest well-supplied centre:
| Town | Population | Local specialists found | Nearest well-supplied centre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port Hedland / South Hedland | 15,298 | None confirmed | Karratha (~240 km) |
| Kununurra | 4,515 | None | Broome / Darwin (~800 km+) |
| Newman | 4,239 | None | Port Hedland (~450 km) |
| Carnarvon | 4,162 | None | Geraldton (~480 km) |
| Derby | 3,009 | None | Broome (~220 km) |
| Tom Price | 2,874 | None | Karratha (~350 km) |
| Exmouth | 2,806 | None | Carnarvon / Geraldton |
Port Hedland is the standout. About 15,000 people live there, yet we found no confirmed local patio installer. The national roofing supplier’s Port Hedland page tells customers to phone to discuss installation options, a sign that there is no local crew. In these towns the work goes to general builders, owner-builders or crews that drive or fly in.
Cities with plenty of people and few specialists
Five regional cities each have only about 1 to 1.4 local specialists per 10,000 residents: Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Albany, Karratha, Geraldton and Broome. Compare that with about 3.8 in Busselton and Dunsborough and 4.8 in Manjimup. Albany and Kalgoorlie-Boulder have roughly 30,000 people each and no patio chain store of their own.
Inland towns with no specialist
Collie (7,184), Narrogin (3,745) and Katanning (3,641) have no local patio specialist that we could find. Collie is the largest, and Bunbury firms partly cover it.
Where there is no shortage
The Perth metro area, Mandurah and Pinjarra, and the Bunbury to Busselton to Margaret River corridor are well supplied or saturated. In Perth suburbs, searches hit the 20-listing cap with 8 to 18 specialists each.
What this means if you live in a gap town
- You may be quoted by a general builder with limited patio experience, so ask to see completed patios.
- Ask who engineers the structure. In cyclonic regions such as the Pilbara and Kimberley, a permit and engineering are needed even for small structures.
- Ask about lead times and travel costs from the start.

Limits of this audit
Map searches return at most 20 results, so counts for large centres are minimums. “Local” means based within about 40 km, and fly-in crews, owner-builders and general builders who occasionally build patios are not counted. Real capacity in remote towns may be slightly higher.
