Patios we build in Melville
- Skillion patios: a single sloping roof, usually attached to the house.
- Gable patios: a peaked roof with extra height and a traditional look.
- Flat roof patios: a low profile that suits contemporary homes.
- Pergolas, gazebos and carports: open or covered structures for shade, parking or garden features.
Building permits in Melville
In Western Australia, most patios, pergolas, carports and similar structures need a building permit before work starts. In Melville, applications go to the City of Melville. Your design also has to meet the planning rules for your lot, such as boundary setbacks and open space.

Building a patio in Melville: what the City of Melville requires
Building permit: not needed for a freestanding patio or carport of 10 m² or less and 2.4 m or less in height (outside wind regions C and D). A pergola with a Class 1 building needs none if it is 2.4 m or less high and covers 20 m² or less. Pergolas with an impervious roof, such as Colorbond or polycarbonate, are treated as patios. Structures attached to the house may need a permit.
Planning approval: needed if the proposal does not comply with the Residential Design Codes or the City’s local planning policies.
Engineering: a structural engineer must check and certify the design. Owner-builders need an Owner-Builder Certificate for work worth $20,000 or more.
