Building a patio in Cockburn: what the City of Cockburn requires
Patios (impervious roof): a building permit is needed if the patio is attached to a dwelling or garage. A freestanding patio needs one if it is over 10 m² or over 2.4 m high.
Setbacks: freestanding patios at least 900 mm from the dwelling; attached patios 900 mm from any boundary, except one that adjoins a road or public space. Smaller setbacks need a certified fire engineering solution or a wall with a 60/60/60 fire resistance level.
Pergolas (open or permeable roof): a building permit is needed if the floor area is over 20 m² or the height is over 2.4 m.
